This Sumi-e Landscapes series incorporates the spontaneous quality of sumi-e ink painting, combined with the precise and deliberate accuracy of drawing.   I watch the black ink seep and flow, and then pay attention to particularities of the paper that the ink reveals - the folds and creases, textures, colors and lines. Together, they represent chaos and precision; losing control and regaining it; and balancing spontaneity with the allure of intricacy.

These abstract paintings express not a real or physical place, but imagined and sometimes dream-like landscapes.  Elements of nature, such as rivers, fog, rocks and mountains, create the essence of place, within the realm of imagination.

The paintings offer lessons in perspective:  one may observe the overall landscape, and only then notice intricacies and details perhaps overlooked on first glance - mountain kingdoms, bursting springs, newsprint crevices and leafy hideaways.  In our own lives, we are reminded to attend to the intimacy of moments, portents of small actions, and beauty of details that may be entirely missed as we whisk through our days.
